Chip Sealing.
Chip sealing is hot liquid asphalt with small stone chips pressed into the top. Rougher surface than smooth asphalt, lower cost per foot, and the right choice for long country driveways, ranch lanes, and rural municipality roads where the price of full asphalt is hard to justify.
When chip sealing is the right call
Long country approaches that would cost a fortune in smooth asphalt. Ranch and farm lanes. Rural municipality roads with moderate traffic. Acreage drives where you want a real surface but don't need the polished look. The cost per running foot is much lower than full asphalt paving.
Texture actually helps in winter
The rougher surface gives you better traction in snow and ice, which is why provincial highways often chip seal instead of overlay. It's a feature, not a downgrade. Less slipping in spring melt. Less white-knuckle driving in February.
How chip seal ages
Chip Seal doesn't need sealcoating, the stone-and-asphalt surface is its own seal. Maintenance is mostly crack-filling as small cracks appear, and a fresh re-chip every seven to ten years depending on traffic. Lower long-term maintenance than smooth asphalt.
